Summer action plan in place to tackle water crisis: Parvesh
Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma on Friday announced that a comprehensive summer action plan is in place to ensure uninterrupted water supply across the city. The government is conducting regular reviews and has deployed nodal officers in every area to monitor and address supply issues.
Verma made the announcement after a review meeting with MLAs and senior officials of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in the Assembly.
“We are holding meetings every two to three days to assess the situation, track complaints and ensure that necessary steps are taken to prevent disruptions,” he said.
Verma said while several areas in Delhi had adequate groundwater level, more tube wells were being installed in regions where freshwater was available.
Tanker fleet will be strengthened and operational improvements will be made for areas dependent on tankers. Earlier, each tanker had only one driver. Now, two drivers will be deployed to prevent supply disruptions.
The review meeting saw participation from BJP and other party MLAs, along with senior DJB officials. Discussions revolved around identifying water-stressed areas and implementing measures to maintain consistent water supply.
“Officials have been instructed to immediately address any irregularities in supply and resolve public grievances on a priority,” Verma said.
To ensure fair water distribution, the government has appointed nodal officers in every region. These officers will be responsible for monitoring water supply and reporting issues directly to the minister.
“We will not allow any discrimination in water distribution. Every household must receive adequate supply,” Verma asserted.
Verma accused the former AAP government of politicising water distribution, claiming that water supply was prioritised in areas with AAP MLAs, while other localities suffered shortages.
“We received several complaints about biased water distribution. Our government is ensuring that water is allocated fairly based on population needs,” he said.
The minister also emphasised the need to reduce water leakage and improve Delhi’s water management system, which, he said, had been neglected by past administrations.
“A significant portion of our budget is dedicated to repairing the Munak Canal, which faces severe leakage issues,” he added.
Verma announced strict action against illegal water operators, or the so-called water mafia, to prevent water theft and unfair distribution.
“Our priority is to ensure clean and adequate water for every Delhi resident. Water will no longer be controlled by select political groups. It will be fairly distributed among all,” he said.
Following the Assembly meeting, the summer action plan has been further strengthened, with nodal officers overseeing supply operations.
“There will be no water crisis in Delhi. We are committed to ensuring that every household gets an uninterrupted water supply this summer,” Verma assured.
