Nestled beside the lively Jhelum Lawns and the iconic Kamal Complex, Sutlej Hostel is more than just a residence at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Built in the 1970s, it stands as one of the JNU’s oldest hostels, carrying with it decades of debates, celebrations and friendships.

With its signature red-brick architecture, leafy surroundings and covered balconies, the hostel offers a unique blend of calm and vibrancy. Its proximity to the North Gate, Ganga Dhaba and the open air theatre places students at the very heart of the campus life.

“A hostel is not merely about rooms and facilities, it is about creating a space where students from different courses and backgrounds — from undergraduate to doctoral — live, learn and grow together. Sutlej Hostel embodies this spirit of collective living, where diversity becomes strength and everyday interactions turn into lifelong lessons,” said Asheesh Kumar, Senior Warden, Sutlej Hostel.

Outside, the Jhelum Lawns have been a stage for presidential debates during the JNUSU elections as well as massive Holi celebrations attended by nearly 10,000 students — occasions where ideas are exchanged and memories created.

Inside, Sutlej nurtures a rare sense of community. Housing 351 students from across India and abroad, the hostel provides sports facilities, a reading room, a gym and a system of democratic elections, reflecting JNU’s culture of balancing academics with recreation.

“As a PhD scholar living in this hostel for the past four years, I continue to cherish the experience each day. The facilities make life comfortable, but more importantly, Sutlej fosters a vibrant and supportive atmosphere that feels like home. Being part of this community has truly enriched both my academic journey and personal growth,” said Sohail Raza, president of Sutlej Hostel.

For many, Sutlej is not merely a residence. It has been a home, a stage and a journey shaping its residents into thoughtful and engaged individuals.

“When I first joined this hostel as an MA student, I was little nervous about living away from home. But now I greatly enjoy the camaraderie and the warm, lively atmosphere. My stay here has made my time at JNU memorable and full of joy,” said Ashish Kumar, MA student.
