In a hit-and-run case, a 13-year-old boy riding a bicycle died after being hit by a speeding Thar SUV in Vasant Kunj area here, the police said on Friday.
The accident took place near the Indian Oil petrol pump, falling under the jurisdiction of the Vasant Kunj North police station on Tuesday.
The police said the SUV hit the boy from the rear. The driver fled the spot after the mishap. Locals rushed the victim, who suffered serious injuries, to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The mother of the deceased said the child could have been saved if he had received timely medical attention.
“No one took my son to the hospital. The police are saying they have filed a case, but the accused has not been arrested so far,” she said.
The incident has triggered outrage among Vasant Kunj residents, who are now demanding stricter traffic rule enforcement and speed control measures on the stretch.
This tragedy underscores the increasing number of fatal road accidents in the national capital, where traffic police data consistently shows rash and negligent driving as the leading cause of deaths on city roads.
