Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday announced that a ‘swachhata challenge’ will soon be launched as part of the month-long cleanliness campaign “Delhi Ko Koode Se Azaadi” (Freedom from Garbage), to amplify public awareness by involving prominent public figures and celebrities.

Giving details about the challenge, CM Gupta said the initiative would symbolically begin with the nomination of 78 citizens, symbolising the 78th year of country’s Independence. Each of these nominated participants will in turn nominate five more individuals, creating a multiplying network of cleanliness champions across the city.

“To further energise the campaign, notable celebrities will also be engaged, bringing greater visibility and momentum to the mission,” she said.

CM Gupta also took part in a cleanliness drive at Sanjay Basti, Mall Road, under the Timarpur constituency. She also visited the JJ Colony and surrounding lanes in Timarpur to inspect the sanitation conditions.

“Today, I witnessed a young man voluntarily cleaning a bus stop. This is a powerful indicator that cleanliness is no longer just a government programme in Delhi, it has become a people’s movement,” she said.

The CM urged citizens to look beyond mere surface-level cleaning. “This is not just a sanitation campaign, it is a behavioural transformation initiative,” Gupta added.

“Our government sees cleanliness not as a task, but as a civic value. Our ultimate aim is to change mindsets and establish a culture of cleanliness,” she mentioned.

She reiterated that the Delhi Government is working tirelessly to transform the Capital into a modern, clean and citizen-centric city.
