Delhi’s Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Monday wrote to Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) VK Saxena to enforce stringent measures against the illegal sale and distribution of firecrackers within the National Capital Territory (NCT).
The request comes after a complete ban on the manufacture, storage, sale and bursting of firecrackers was implemented across Delhi until Jan1. Rai, in a letter said, “It is well established that bursting of firecrackers not only adversely affects the environment, but also poses a health hazard to children, elderly and people with respiratory ailments.” The minister expressed concern over reports of firecrackers being openly sold in markets.
