A 25-year-old youth, who struck ACP (Crime) Varun Dahiya with his car after the ACP attempted to intervene when the young man was attempting stunts with his SUV, was arrested on Thursday.
During the incident, Dahiya sustained injuries on his knees and stomach. An FIR was filed against the assailant, identified as Tarun Kumar of Harsaru.
Prioritise safety
Ignoring safety, youths continue to perform stunts on vehicles. We are taking prompt action against those engaging in these acts. The police urge individuals involved in such activities not to prioritise social media likes over safety. — Varun Dahiya, ACP (Crime)
The incident occurred on January 17 on the Dwarka Expressway near Garhi Harsaru in the Sector 10-A police station area. However, the police attempted to suppress the incident, and the FIR was not initially made available online on the police website.
According to the police, ACP Dahiya, accompanied by an inspector from the Crime Unit, was on patrol in their official vehicle when they observed a young man performing stunts on the road in a Scorpio car. The ACP instructed his driver to stop the young man driving the Scorpio, and an interrogation ensued.
When questioned about his reckless behaviour, Tarun said his father held the position of Special Police Officer (SPO) in the Gurugram police force. The ACP asked the youth to contact his father, who subsequently arrived at the scene. Witnessing his son’s misconduct, the SPO slapped his son in front of the ACP and inspector.
Enraged by his father’s action, Tarun retaliated by driving his SUV into Dahiya before fleeing the scene. The ACP fell down on the ground, while the inspector and ACP’s driver had a narrow escape. Dahiya was transported to the hospital for treatment, where he was diagnosed with injuries to his spine and knees. After a period of hospitalisation and subsequent rest at home, he returned to duty this week.
An FIR was subsequently lodged at Sector 10-A police station under relevant sections of the IPC and the Motor Vehicles Act, leading to the arrest of the perpetrator.
Confirming the incident, Dahiya stated that videos depicting stunts are frequently surfacing on both the Dwarka Expressway and Mumbai Expressway. “In response to such occurrences, prompt action is taken by identifying the perpetrators. The Gurugram police urge individuals engaged in such activities not to prioritise social media likes over safety,” the ACP emphasised.
