In response to a parliamentary question on the growing demand for higher education in the national capital, the Ministry of Education has revealed that over 1.75 lakh students were unable to secure admission to undergraduate courses at the University of Delhi in 2024.
Replying to Lok Sabha MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar stated that the University of Delhi received a total of 2,46,194 applications for admission to undergraduate courses in the year 2024. Out of this, only 70,422 students were admitted.
Addressing the concern regarding the establishment of new colleges under Delhi University, Majumdar clarified that the university is a statutory autonomous organisation governed by the Delhi University Act, 1922. He emphasised that DU has continued to expand its presence across the Capital.
“The university is spread across the entire region of Delhi with its large number of associated institutions. Recent expansions include Delhi University Western Campus at Dwarka, Delhi University Eastern Campus at Surjmal Vihar and Veer Savarkar College at Roshanpura, Najafgarh,” he added.
The response comes amid increasing pressure on the higher education infrastructure in Delhi, with limited seats and growing competition continuing to be a major challenge for aspiring students.
