Industry and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh on Friday visited several waterlogged areas in Gurugram to assess the situation and inspect ongoing arrangements following heavy rainfall in the region, according to an official statement.

The minister inspected multiple flood-affected locations, including Sikandarpur, Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Gadoli Culvert, Basai Chowk, Mata Road and Old Delhi Road. His visit came after torrential rain lashed North India, including the Delhi-NCR region, early Friday morning, submerging large parts of Gurugram — a major hub of multinational companies and high-rise office spaces.

Singh directed Gurugram Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ashok Garg and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) officials to assign a dedicated officer to each site. “If the need arises, the officer can take action at the government level. This will also ensure that no officer escapes their responsibilities. Their phone number should also be made public so the residents could contact them directly in times of distress,” he said.

He emphasised the need for a coordinated effort in the next two months to ensure the city is ready for the monsoon. “In a democratic system, we all have accountability towards the public. Gurugram district should remain free from waterlogging in monsoon and people should not face any inconvenience while commuting. For this, we all have to collectively work on the ground in the next two months,” Singh added.

He also directed that wherever road construction is underway, the cleaning of drains and the building of footpaths should be prioritised and completed first. Furthermore, he instructed officials to involve local councillors or Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) in areas where sewer or drainage work is being carried out, ensuring local input in planning and execution.

During his inspection, residents complained about garbage from local meat shops being dumped into drains and sewers, which, they said, could cause blockages and spread disease. Taking cognisance of this, Singh instructed police officials to shut down all illegal meat shops in the vicinity within a month, the statement added.
