Wall collapse at Gokulpuri Metro station leaves 1 dead

Tragedy struck the Gokulpuri Metro station on the Pink Line in northeast Delhi this morning when a portion of the station’s boundary wall collapsed, leaving one person dead and four others injured.

According to reports, the collapse occurred around 11 am, when a section of the station wall towards the Up Platform fell onto the road below, trapping commuters under the debris.
Fiftythree-year-old Vinod Kumar, a resident of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Colony in Karawal Nagar, who was on his scooter, was caught in the aftermath of the collapse. He was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, while four other injured were also rushed to hospitals.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh for Kumar’s family, along with financial aid for the injured — Rs 5 lakh for major injuries and Rs 1 lakh for minor ones.
In the wake of the tragedy, the DMRC ordered the suspension of two officials at the Gokulpuri Metro station pending further investigation.
Anuj Dayal, principal executive director, corporate communications, DMRC, said train services in the affected areas had been adjusted after the mishap.
Vikas Kumar, managing director, DMRC, has directed all departments to conduct rigorous safety checks across the entire Delhi Metro network. He assured the public that a thorough investigation into the incident would be conducted to identify their root cause and implement necessary measures to prevent similar incidents.
Meanwhile, senior officials, accompanied by staffers of relevant departments, were leading efforts to assess the situation firsthand at the accident site.
