According to the FIR, Kumar stated that around 3:15 am, he woke up in pain after his wife, Shadhna, poured boiling oil on him. He alleged that his wife then sprinkled chilli powder on him and threatened to pour more oil if he raised an alarm.

Hearing his screams, the landlord rushed to the spot. He informed the victim’s brother-in-law about the incident, who took him to Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital. He was later referred to Safdarjung Hospital with 20 per cent burn injuries. Doctors termed his injuries as “dangerous,” the FIR mentioned.

Police records show that the couple had been married for eight years. Kumar claimed that his wife had earlier filed a complaint against him with the Crime against Women (CAW) Cell, which were later settled.

Based on his statement and medical report, a case under Sections 118(2) voluntary act of causing grievous hurt and 124(1) grievous hurt by use of acid of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at the Ambedkar Nagar police station. The police said further investigation was on into the matter.
