Youth lands in police net for snatching MP’s gold chain

Accused a habitual offender, was released on bail in June

Two days after Congress MP R Sudha’s gold chain was snatched from the Chanakyapuri area while she was on a morning walk, the Delhi Police claimed to have solved the case with the arrest of a 24-year-old youth on Wednesday.

The accused has been identified as Sohan Rawat, alias Sonu. He is a habitual offender as 26 criminal cases were registered against him in the past. He was released on bail on June 26 in a vehicle theft case.

The police recovered the MP’s gold chain, a stolen scooter used in the crime and four snatched mobile phones from his possession.

Addressing a press conference, Joint Commissioner of Police (Southern Range) Sanjay Jain said the accused was arrested in a joint operation conducted by the Delhi Police team of Zone-II (Team of Anti Auto Theft Squad, South District, operation team of South West and New Delhi District).

CCTV cameras installed under ‘Nirbhaya Scheme’, an initiative of the Ministry of Home Affairs, helped in identifying and tracking the accused.

The accused, a resident of Chirag Delhi, was disowned by his family four years ago due to his involvement in criminal activities.

Giving statistics, Jain said there is a 48 per cent decline in PCR calls related to snatching incidents in New Delhi district. The detection rate in such cases is 83 per cent.

Similarly, South District witness a decline of 20 per cent in snatching-related PCR calls, whereas the detection rate in such cases is 65 per cent.
