L-G lays stone for 500 kW solar power plant at Delhi Assembly

Lieutenant Governor (L-G) VK Saxena on Monday laid the foundation stone for a 500 kW solar power plant at the Delhi Legislative Assembly, marking a major step toward sustainable governance.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Speaker Vijender Gupta, along with senior ministers and officials, were also present during the ceremony.

Once operational, the Delhi Assembly will become the country’s first fully solar-powered legislature. The project aims to cover the building’s entire electricity demand and help the Assembly save Rs 1.75 crore annually through zero electricity bills. Surplus energy could also generate revenue.

“This foundation stone is not just for a solar plant, it’s for a cleaner and greener future rooted in responsible governance,” said L-G Saxena. He assured full support from the Delhi Development Authority in declaring the Assembly a heritage site.

Speaker Vijender Gupta called the project a milestone in Delhi’s green transition. “With this solar initiative, we are not only lighting up the Assembly, but also illuminating a path toward a sustainable future,” he said.

He also mentioned other modernisation measures like e-Vidhan adoption, digitisation of the Assembly library and a light-and-sound show.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasised that the solar plant complements the Centre’s PM-Surya Ghar Yojana. She said residents were eligible for a subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 for installing rooftop solar panels.

“With power demand likely to hit 9,000 MW soon, such initiatives are vital for long-term energy sustainability,” she said.

PWD Minister Parvesh Verma and Energy Minister Ashish Sood also lauded the project. Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht described it as a “significant step toward sustainable governance.”

The event was also attended by Chief Whip Abhay Verma, MLAs, PWD Principal Secretary A Anbarasu, and Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretary Ranjit Singh.
