Amid an intensified crackdown on individuals allegedly linked to espionage activities, a team of the Special Task Force (STF) Hisar detained a man from Kurukshetra on Saturday night. However, he was released by the police on Sunday evening after preliminary questioning.

The man, identified as Harkirat Singh, is a resident of Ajrana village and works as an employee of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) in Kurukshetra. His sudden detention triggered concern among his family members, who claimed they were unaware of the reasons behind the action.

According to sources, a team from STF Hisar arrived in Kurukshetra and picked up Harkirat Singh from Shyam Colony and took him to Hisar for questioning. CCTV footage of the incident has also surfaced, capturing the moment he was taken away by the team.

Harkirat’s father expressed shock over the development. “Last night six men came and took Harkirat with them from Shyam Colony. He works as Yatra incharge under HSGMC and handles visa-related work for batches of devotees who travel to Pakistan to pay obeisance every year. However, Harkirat has never been to Pakistan. We have no idea why he was detained. We had no communication with him so far,” he said.

The family further added that they only came to know of his detention on Sunday after Harkirat’s wife informed them.

Later in the evening, a Hisar police spokesperson confirmed Harkirat’s release, stating: “Harkirat was called for questioning in an espionage case and has been let off as he has no role in the matter.”

The development comes in the backdrop of heightened investigations into alleged spying cases in the region. Police have so far arrested a few suspects and are continuing background checks and questioning of others believed to have relevant connections or information.
