2.2 million views: The viral story of NRI family who chose to return to India after 17 years of stay in US

After spending 17 years in the United States, Dhara, an Indian-American mother, has chosen to return to India with her family, citing cultural connection and healthcare concerns as key reasons.

Dhara, who moved to the US at 15, married an Indian-origin man and had twins there. Over the past few years, the couple began discussing a return to India and meticulously planned their move before making the leap.

In two viral Instagram videos, Dhara explained that she wanted her children to grow up immersed in Indian culture. “In India, my twins are growing up with our prayers, our stories, and what culture really feels like—not just what it sounds like on a holiday,” she said.

Healthcare was another major factor in their decision. Dhara highlighted the challenges she faced with the US system, including a six-week maternity leave and high insurance costs.

“We had to meet a $14,000 deductible every year before insurance even helped, on top of monthly premiums of $1,600,” she said, noting that this did not even cover their twins. By contrast, she found healthcare in India more accessible, affordable and family-friendly.

Dhara’s videos have struck a chord online, garnering over 2.2 million views on Instagram and sparking widespread discussion on parenting, healthcare and expat life.
