‘Angry’ over being asked to wait, patient attacks Indian-origin nurse with scissors in Manchester hospital

Achamma Cherian, a 57-year-old Indian-origin nurse, was stabbed by a patient with a pair of scissors at the acute medical unit in Oldham Royal Hospital in Greater Manchester.

The patient was in his 30s and has been arrested, while Cherian is in critical condition as of now.

Cherian had been an employee at Oldham Royal for the last 10 years, as per a report by The Sun.

Her residence is close to the hospital and her neighbours said she frequently worked the night shift.

The accused, Mohammed Roman Haque, supposedly attacked Cherian because he was “angry” about being asked to wait for a medical assessment. He appeared at the Manchester Magistrates’ Court and was charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.

Wes Streeting, UK’s Health Secretary posted about the incident on his X handle, saying “Nurses are the backbone of our NHS and should be able to care for patients without fear of violence”, while Oldham West MP Jim McMahon called the incident “a senseless attack.”
