Jaishankar opens Indian consulate in Brisbane

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday formally inaugurated an Indian Consulate in Brisbane in Australia.

Apart from the High Commission at Canberra, the Australian capital, India has consulates at Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. The new one at Brisbane in Queensland will be the fourth.

“Opening of the consulate is fulfilling the promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” said the minister, adding, “The India-Australia ties have transformed.”

After the event, the minister posted on x, saying, “Delighted to formally inaugurate new Consulate General of India in Brisbane today. It will contribute to strengthening India’s ties with Queensland state, promoting trade, fostering educational linkages and serving the diaspora.”

Jeannette Young, Governor of Queensland, was present at the event.

Last week, the Indian High Commission in Canberra said Indian Passport and Visa Services Centre in Brisbane was now fully operational and accepting applications for all categories.

Jaishankar is on a five-day visit to Australia (November 3 to 7). Jaishankar will also co-chair the 15th Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in Canberra.
