Sikh musician shot dead outside gurdwara in US state of Alabama in suspected hate crime
Chandigarh, March 1
In a suspected hate crime, a 29-year-old Sikh musician–who was part of a Sikh kirtan group–was allegedly shot dead outside a gurdwara at Selma in the US state of Alabama on Saturday.
Raj Singh, also called Goldy, was a resident of Tanda Sahuwala village in Bijnor district of UP. He was a ‘ragi’ who was in the US with his musical group for over a year.
Goldy was shot by unidentified men when he was standing outside the gurdwara. His family was told about the mishap on Sunday.
“We were informed about the incident by relatives. It has been five days, and his post-mortem is yet to be done. We have reached out to the gurdwara committee for more information, and they are helping us. We have also appealed to our government for justice and the arrest of the killers,” said Gurdeep Singh, the deceased’s brother-in-law, reported the Times of India.
Selma police say there was no indication of racial motivation behind Raj Singh’s killing, according to Selma-based news outlet GVWire, which cited sergeant Caleb Garcia.
