INDIA is banking on unfettered innovation to excel in the chaotic field of artificial intelligence (AI). The AI Governance Guidelines, unveiled by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Wednesday, prioritise a people-centric approach so that AI can serve as a catalyst for inclusive growth and public trust. According to IT Secretary S Krishnan, the government will introduce regulation or legislation when required. The wait-and-watch policy makes sense, considering that countries across the world are finding it very tough to regulate AI. As of now, India does not want prohibitive safeguards to put off innovators and investors. It is thanks to this open-door policy that tech giant Google recently announced an investment of $15 billion over the next five years to establish an AI hub in Andhra Pradesh.
