Decline in school enrolment a matter of concern

THERE are positive as well as negative takeaways from the latest report of the Unified District Information System for Education Plus, released by the Ministry of Education this week. On the bright side, the number of schoolteachers across the country crossed the one-crore mark during 2024-25 — for the first time in any academic year. The pupil-teacher ratio — from pre-primary to secondary levels — has improved significantly, though it is well short of the National Education Policy’s (NEP’s) recommended ratio of 1:30. There has also been a notable reduction in dropout rates, attributed to targeted interventions aimed at boosting retention.
