Eminent novelist and short storyteller Dr Dalip Kaur Tiwana, 84, breathed her last during treatment at a private hospital in Mohali in Friday.
The Padma Shri and Sahitya Akademy awardee had taken ill due to cold in the first week of January.
The novelist known for ‘Teeli da Nishaan’, ‘Sooraj te Samandar’ and others was admitted to a private hospital in Patiala and later shifted to Max Hospital, Mohali.
She retired as professor of Punjabi, and Dean, Faculty of Languages, from Punjabi University, Patiala, where she lived thereafter.
Dr Tiwana had returned her Padma Shri award against increasing intolerance in the country in 2015.
She was awarded the Saraswati Samman in 2001 for novel Katha Kaho Urvashi. The languages department, Punjab awarded her with the Shiromani Sahitkar Award in 1987. The state government also awarded her with Punjabi Sahit Rattan Award in 2008.
