Three shows dominated the 2023 Emmy Awards — Succession, The Bear and Beef. Each show nearly swept their respective category in the drama, comedy and limited series races. Succession and The Bear tied with a leading six wins each, and Beef followed closely with five awards.

Hosted by Anthony Anderson, the 75th Emmy Awards provided multiple tributes to hit shows of the past as well as the present. The casts of series like Cheers, The Sopranos, Ally McBeal and Martin reunited for the night, while former cast members of shows like ‘Grey’s Anatomy and the ever-Emmy-ignored comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia took the stage to present the awards.

Succession won outstanding drama series, and stars Kieran Culkin (lead actor in a drama), Sarah Snook (lead actress in a drama) and Matthew Macfadyen (supporting actor in a drama) each won awards. Writer and creator Jesse Armstrong and director Mark Mylod each won for the Connor’s Wedding episode, in which Waystar Royco CEO Logan Roy dies. The show also won outstanding drama. The Bear won outstanding comedy for its first season, with Jeremy Allen White (lead actor in a comedy), Ayo Edebiri (lead actress in a comedy) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (supporting actor in a comedy) taking home prizes. Creator Christopher Storer also won for writing and directing. Beef won the Outstanding Limited Series. Its stars Steven Yeun (lead actor) and Ali Wong (lead actress) won awards, plus creator Lee Sung Jin earned honours for writing and directing.

Elton John joins ‘EGOT’ Club

Music legend Elton John has now been inducted into the EGOT hall of fame. The Rocket Man singer, 76, won an Emmy Award for best Variety special for Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger’s Stadium, adding him to the short list of celebrities to have earned an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony (EGOT). After the win, Elton, now the 19th person to ever score the coveted four awards, added: “I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight. The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world. Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful.”

Stars rock on the red carpet

The star-studded list of attendees includes Rhea Seehorn, Giancarlo Esposito, Sam Claflin, Laverne Cox, Adam Brody, Ken Jeong, Alex Borstein, Brian Cox, Quinta Brunson, Hannah Waddingham, Kathryn Hahn and many more. Other celebrities who were seen on the red carpet included Padma Lakshmi, who wore a lime green ensemble, Courtney Eaton, who wore a sheer black gown, Beef actress Maria Bello, Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire, Prey star Amber Midthunder, Abbott Elementary star Tyler James, Better Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn, and Giancarlo Esposito. Laverne Cox, Jesse Eisenberg, and The White Lotus actor Adam DiMarco were seen on the red carpet too.

RuPaul wins fifth time

RuPaul’s Drag Race has won the Emmy for Outstanding Reality Competition Program leaving behind The Amazing Race, Survivor, Top Chef and The Voice. It marks the series’ fifth Emmy win. RuPaul’s Drag Race’ previously won this category four years in a row between 2018 and 2021. RuPaul also won ‘Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program’ at last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys, taking his total to 14 wins in 22 nominations across the years. Season 15 of RuPaul’s Drag Race premiered in January 2023.
