I am funny: Surbhi Jyoti

This is your Hindi film debut. How did you go about selecting this project?

Honestly speaking, I didn’t feel that I am doing something differently. My only motive has been to stay true to my role and performance.

Kya Meri Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai is Surekha Sikhri’s last film. How was it working with the late actress?

I would say I am fortunate that I got an opportunity to share the screen with her. She was so full of life and what a brilliant actress she was. Undoubtedly one of the greatest talents the industry has seen.

Your onscreen chemistry with your hero has always been perfect. How do you manage to do that?

Whenever I play any character, I just become that person. It may sound cliched, but that’s the truth. I have done theatre for close to seven years in Punjab and my biggest take away from that is – you need to feel the character. So, I guess that’s the reason my onscreen chemistry looks real.

You have a huge fan-following. Doesn’t that put additional pressure on you?

I think responsibility is the right word. When your fans love you so much you need to be responsible for your work. I have been quite rational about my choices for years. If I had been in a hurry, I would have done a Hindi film five years back.

You are good when it comes to comedy. What’s the secret?

The secret is that not many people are aware that in real life I am quite funny. And the glimpses of that people have seen in my show Qubool Hai!

Why haven’t you tried a reality show yet?

As a person I am not competitive, though I love adventure and travel. I don’t think I am fit for any kind of reality show.

Are you looking forward to working in Punjabi films again?

I have worked in Punjabi films as a student. I was quite naive and raw. I was not aware of the craft. My growth started when I came to Mumbai. So now if I get something good in Punjabi films, I will do.

Who has been your mentor?

I am a person who doesn’t have any favourites. I don’t even have a favourite colour. I get inspired by anything and everything. I learn from my own mistakes.
