Robert Pattinson finds playing ‘normal’ challenging

Actor Robert Pattinson recently spoke about the challenge of portraying more conventional characters after years of playing quirky, brooding roles. The discussion came while promoting his new film, Die My Love, co-starring Jennifer Lawrence

Pattinson revealed in an interview that playing a “normal person” is “actually kind of difficult” for him, having grown accustomed to portraying “freaks and stuff.” He shared, “At one point, I really wanted to play some normal guys… And it’s actually kind of difficult to play a normal person when you’re used to playing freaks.”

Die My Love, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, centres on Lawrence’s character Grace and Pattinson’s Jackson, who spend time together in a remote Montana home while Grace grapples with her mental health. The film’s trailer contrasts moments of joy and dancing with intense, erratic behaviour and emotional outbursts.

An official synopsis describes Grace as “slowly slipping into madness,” leaving Jackson increasingly concerned as her agitation grows. Pattinson’s recent roles in 2022’s The Batman, where he played a moody Bruce Wayne and this year’s sci-fi film Mickey 17, featuring a futuristic character who repeatedly clones himself, differ significantly from his role in Die My Love, as the actor hinted.

Discussing his work with Lawrence earlier this year, Pattinson also revealed his struggle with improvising dance scenes. “They just find it so easy… and I’m like, ‘I’m going to have a mental breakdown when this happens. We need to either choreograph it or cut it,’” he said.

Reflecting on his career, Pattinson remarked, “At a certain point — maybe when you hit your 30s — you realise, ‘I can’t sit around waiting for my agent to call. I’ll be dead.’”

Die My Love is set to release in theatres on November 7.
