As an actor what are the advantages of a short film?

It’s very time bound and you know when you are going to start and finish. And also, it is very challenging for the team to tell a story within 30 minutes.

I have known the director, Ram Kamal Mukherjee, for some time now. He is an honest and straightforward person and his way of storytelling pulled me towards this project. I am glad that I went with my belief.

How do you approach a fresh role?

Honestly, my approach has changed since the time I started. When I was young, I used to go to the sets without preparation. Now, I go well prepared. For the last 25 years I have been following one rule very strictly. Apart from my own lines, I do read my co-stars’ lines as well. This tip was given by Naseeruddin Shah.

How was your experience of working with Ritabhari Chakraborty?

She is one of the sweetest and talented co-stars I have worked with. She is like a breath of fresh air. I had never met her before Broken Frame. I trusted Ram Kamal in this and when I met her on the set, I knew she was the right one for the role.

You have directed a short film Rice Plate with Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi. When are you directing again?

I keep coming back to acting whenever there is a delay in my direction plans. And I also am responsible for my family, so acting is important! But hopefully I will be directing soon as a couple of scripts are there in my mind. Direction gives me great joy.

Your partnership with your wife Mansi is a long one. What is the secret of your relationship?

I feel the secret is to understand each other nicely. Marriages are breaking because people have forgotten their wedding vows. Mansi and I are strong headed and we do have our fights but we always respect our space.

Your daughter Kiara has grown up to be a beautiful young lady. Will she follow your footsteps?

She will be studying in the prestigious Brown University, USA. Right now, education is her priority. But whatever she will choose after that, she will have our support.

You almost look the same over the last 25 years. How do you stay so fit?

More than having a fit body it is the positive frame of mind which is so important and it amplifies everything that you do. Every morning a strict regimen of fitness sets me up for a good and positive day. I rejuvenate myself.

What is your ray of hope during these tough times?

To me happiness is when people around me are happy and healthy. We really need to help each other. It will definitely make this earth a better place.
