The show says one man’s karma is another’s future. How much do you believe in karma?

I do believe in karma a lot. I started with the character of Kush in Uttar Ramayan at the age of nine and then I played Lord Krishna’s role. So quite early in my life I was exposed to our scriptures, mythology and the theory of karma.

After such a long career, what attracts you to a new role?

I have been wanting to make my digital debut for quite some time now. On the web, the characters stay real – right from the script to the execution. Those are the roles that challenge me. They push me out of my comfort zone. Samantar is definitely that kind of a project.

What is the USP of Samantar?

Samantar looks at future-gazing, astrology, karma, past and future in a different way. The writer, Suhas Shirwalkar, has written the story in a brilliant manner.

How do you prepare for a role?

I have mostly done a boy-next-door character in the romantic comedy genre. Samantar is totally different. My character is crooked, one who beats up his wife and is an alcoholic.

When you do an intense role like this, how do you unwind yourself?

We have shot the second season in a bio-bubble atmosphere, so no one got back home. In the first season, I had to convince myself hard to play Kumar Mahajan on screen.

How will you define your working experience with Nitish Bharadwaj?

We have both played the character of Krishna in different times. So, the conversations were mostly based on anecdotes; how television has changed over the years, what’s the role of technology now, etc. He is a very learned man and it was overall an enriching experience.

What is your view on the OTT space?

Well, first it was test cricket, then one-day and now T20! So, in the entertainment industry, web is the next big thing. I genuinely feel entertainment is the primary necessity of humanity.

What do you do in your free time?

I am an avid reader. Listening to good music and watching good international content also keeps me busy.
