Living a childhood dream is Apurva Sharma. Working as an architect in Australia, she returned home to Patiala to give a chance to the singer inside her. On Monday, she launched her first song, Teriyan Judaiyan. All of 25, Apurva says she loves Indian music. “I’ve always been interested in Sufi songs. I started doing riyaz when I was in school. My father, Ashish Sharma, is a poet and he encouraged me to pursue singing along with my studies.” For her debut song, Apurva says she was working on it for the last five years. “I wanted to create something that blended Hindi and Punjabi lyrics, had some poetry. My song has all these elements.”
Inspired by singers, including AP Dhillon, Neha Kakkar, Badshah, Shreya Ghoshal, Arijit Singh, she also enjoys Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber’s songs. So, is she considering a switch in careers? She responds, “No, I will continue my practice as an architect in Australia, but would also focus on music. I am already working on two other songs.”
Apurva says during her growing-up years in Indonesia, she participated in stage shows where she did anchoring, choreographed songs and even sang. “People there are crazy about our music. They love Hindi and Punjabi songs. Even in school, I would sing and dance at the annual shows. Then I moved on to performing at the functions organised by the Indian government in Indonesia. During my college days in Australia, I continued to perform.”
