La Niña

It is a climate phenomenon characterized by cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. It is a key part of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle and has a significant impact on global weather patterns. In India, La Niña typically leads to variations in the monsoon, often resulting in increased rainfall, which can boost agricultural productivity. However, the phenomenon can also bring extreme weather events such as floods and cyclones, causing disruption to both agriculture and the economy. The term "La Niña," meaning "Little Girl" in Spanish, reflects the phenomenon's cool temperature pattern, in contrast to the warm conditions of El Niño.

Cartagena Protocol

The Cartagena Protocol is an international treaty adopted under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2000. It aims to ensure the safe handling, transport, and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology. The protocol focuses on biosafety, addressing potential risks to biodiversity and human health. India is a party to the protocol, which regulates the transboundary movement of GMOs and promotes environmental protection.

Home Rule Movement

The Home Rule Movement was a political campaign in early 20th century India, aimed at self-governance and increased political rights for Indians within the British Empire. Led by Bal GangadharTilak and Annie Besant, the movement sought to demand greater autonomy for India and promote national self-respect. It focused on improving administrative control, advocating for political reforms, and creating awareness among the masses. The movement laid the groundwork for the Indian independence struggle and strengthened the Indian National Congress.

Zemu Glacier

The Zemu Glacier is located in the Kangchenjunga region of the eastern Himalayas, in the Indian state of Sikkim. It is one of the largest glaciers in the Himalayas, situated at an altitude of around 4,000 meters. The glacier feeds the Teesta River, which plays a vital role in the region's water supply. Zemu Glacier is an important site for climate change research due to its sensitivity to rising temperatures, contributing to studies on glacial retreat and global warming impacts.
