Despite the challenges in reconstructing his philosophy due to the lack of written records, Socrates’ influence on Western thought remains profound. His commitment to critical thinking, self-examination and the pursuit of wisdom continues to inspire and challenge us today.

The trial and legacy

Socrates’ life was cut short when he was put on trial in Athens and sentenced to death. However, his legacy lived on through his students, particularly Plato, who continued to develop and refine his ideas.

Today, Socrates remains an iconic figure, symbolising the pursuit of wisdom, critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. His ideas continue to inspire and challenge us, reminding us that the unexamined life is indeed not worth living.
