Tata Memorial's unit rolls out MenCan initiative to improve lives of men suffering from cancer
Tata Memorial Centre's (TMC) Urologic Oncology Disease Management Group (URO DMG) rolled out 'MenCan' initiative that will focus on improving the lives of men affected by prostate, penile and testicular cancers. According to the data from the Global Cancer Observatory (GCO) 2022, the incidence of prostate cancer is on the rise in India, with an expected 12.6 new cases per 1,00,000 people. In 2025, India is projected to see approximately 41,736 new cases of prostate cancer. Testicular cancer is also on the rise and is expected to reach 4,640 cases by 2025, while penile cancer is projected to account for 11,264 new cases this year, it said. MenCan, a nonprofit and non-commercial initiative, will address the challenges of these cancers that are often neglected but significantly impact men's lives.
Five white-rumped vultures released in Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve
Five white-rumped vultures were released in Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district on Thursday as part of the ambitious 'Jatayu Conservation Project', a senior forest department official said. These vultures, comprising three males and two females, were transported from the Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre (VCBC) in Haryana to the pre-release aviary at Botezari in Kolsa Range here for the process, TATR Core Zone deputy director Anand Reddy said. There is no white-rumped vulture in the wild in TATR and the project is an ambitious move to reintroduce and re-establish this critically endangered species in a landscape from which the vulture population has completely vanished, he added.
Four organ transplant coordination centres to be set up in Maharashtra
Four Zonal Transplant Coordination Centers will be established in Maharashtra, health minister Prakash Abitkar said. Also, Human Organ Recovery Centres will be set up at government hospitals and coordinators will be appointed in every hospital, he said, speaking at an official meeting on organ transplantation here. Transplant coordination centres will come up at Amravati, Kolhapur, Nashik and Solapur, the minister was quoted as saying in an official release. The permission process for living organ donation is being streamlined through Regional Authority Committees, said Abitkar. Organ donation and transplant is gaining momentum in the state, the minister said, adding that it will be encouraged further with the system becoming more transparent and effective.
