How can govt schools benefit from NIPUN Vatika’s innovative approach
EXPLAINER: It aims to enhance foundational education in govt schools by moving away from rote learning
Primary education lays the foundation for a child’s learning journey. While teaching methods continue to evolve, government schools have long relied on traditional models. To bridge this gap, the Rohtak administration has launched “NIPUN Vatika” at Government Model Sanskriti Primary School in Sectors 2, 3 and 4. Spearheaded by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Narendra Kumar and funded through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions, the initiative is being hailed as the first-of-its-kind effort in Haryana to strengthen foundational learning in government schools.
What is NIPUN Vatika and why was it launched?
NIPUN Vatika is a specially designed, activity-based learning space created under the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN) for students up to Class III. The aim is to enhance foundational education in government schools by moving away from rote learning and adopting interactive, child-friendly teaching methods.
What makes NIPUN Vatika different from a regular classroom?
Unlike conventional classrooms, NIPUN Vatika integrates digital screens, projectors, educational toys, learning kits and colourful visual aids. The space encourages hands-on learning where children explore Hindi, English and Mathematics concepts through play and discovery rather than memorisation.
Why is such an initiative important at the primary level?
The early years of schooling are critical for building language, numeracy and social skills. Children who struggle with foundational learning often fall behind in higher classes. By making lessons interactive and enjoyable, NIPUN Vatika boosts confidence, strengthens attendance and fosters meaningful bonds among students, teachers and parents.
How will this initiative impact govt schools and students?
Government schools often face challenges such as low engagement and absenteeism. NIPUN Vatika addresses these issues by transforming classrooms into vibrant, engaging hubs. When children enjoy coming to school, attendance rises naturally. The model also helps bridge learning gaps, improves outcomes and enhances the appeal of government schools for parents.
Why is play-based learning important?
Research shows that children learn best when they are actively engaged. ADC Narendra Kumar highlighted that enjoyable, play-based activities make abstract concepts easier to grasp, while also encouraging creativity, curiosity and social development.
What’s next for NIPUN Vatika?
The Rohtak administration plans to set up similar Vatikas in all government primary schools across the district. ADC Kumar has also proposed the model for replication across Haryana, stressing the importance of holistic development over mere marks. Parents, too, are being encouraged to support the initiative by ensuring regular attendance and active involvement in their children’s education.
