Bedazzled
Crystal nails, electric blue eye shadow, dark red lipstick, purple eyeliner, gemstone eyes and glitter all over the face ... these makeup trends are no less than a gleam renaissance

Bold, vivid, shiny colours marked the New York Fashion Week 2020. Every colour of the rainbow brightened up the ramp, not just in the clothes that the models showcased but also in their makeup. At the Louis Vuitton and Chanel Spring 2020 ready-to-wear shows in Paris too, the luxury brands had painted their models with an ultimate shine giving off a sleek, wet finish. Likewise, at the Milan Fashion Week, Gucci used the glossy lip look on its models.
Keeping up with international fashion trends are our very own stars from the Hindi film industry, who are experimenting with bold and edgy makeup. Fashionista Sonam Kapoor can be seen wearing rose gold makeup, along with rose gold eye shadow lightly lined eyes, glossy rose gold lipstick, complete with a foundation with a rosy tint. Likewise Karisma Kapoor can be seen oozing style with her dewy, almost wet-look highlighted with a golden eyeshadow or glittery eyeliner.
For the gen-next actor Janhvi Kapoor, it’s blue smoky eyes that rule the scenes. She can be often seen wearing smoky neutrals on the eyes, cheeks and lips for a soft, monotone palette that exudes understated elegance.
Actors like Madhuri Dixit, Kiara Advani and Kareena Kapoor, however, prefer glossy lips in neutral shades. Here’s looking at the latest makeup trends that you can incorporate in your individual style:
Try out the neon pops
It is the year of high-voltage, bright beauty looks featuring a range of neon hues. This is great news for those who love to play with their makeup. Swap your retro black wings with something brighter like a highlighter green or pink. If this is a bit too much too soon, you could start by tapping an electric hue on the corners of your eyes for a minimalist, quick pop of colour. The adventurous can also clash colour on their top and bottom eyelids, and have fun playing with their palettes.
Play with your eyeliner
Carrying on with the playful makeup trend, floating and bracket liners are a great way to give the cool-girl vibes without putting in too much effort. For a floating eyeliner, draw your line in the space between your brow bone and lash line. Start from the inner corner of your eye and draw the shape you want. It could be a straight line, a swoop, a short wing, anything you fancy. The bracket liner is a variation of this, with the liner connecting to the corners of the eye to create a bracket of sorts.
Blush overload
When it comes to the blush, pink is ruling the roost. And you won’t be wearing it on just your cheeks. We’re talking blush on the eyelids, temples and under the brow bone to create an all-over flushed, monochromatic look. The effect is that of an intense blush that’s creeping up to your eyes and temples. When going for this look, keep the rest of your makeup subtle. So, keep a muted lip, skip the eyeliner and tone down the mascara.
Bold red lip
No doubt, red lips have been there forever but this time around they have a more contemporary feel. The 2020 trend sees them paired with clean, fresh skin, a hint of the highlighter, bold brows and minimal eye makeup, maybe just a bit of mascara. This helps give a more youthful, fresh, springtime look. The lips can be matte or glossy in texture, and you can even put on a deep stain if you don’t prefer opaque coverage. Remember to prep your lips before swiping on that matte lipstick.
Get that glitter out
Euphoria-inspired makeup isn’t going away anytime soon. It will continue well into the year as proved by number of looks seen at various fashion weeks. You could go all out with bright sparkly glitter and embellishments sprinkled around the eyes. If you haven’t already jumped on the euphoria bandwagon, now’s the time to bedazzle your eyes and try out those gold studs you’ve been eyeing. For a subtler look, you can line your eyes with black kohl, smudge it a bit, and layer some silver sparkle or glitter under your eyes.
The watercolour effect
The watercolour eyes is a pretty trend that sees soft focus pastels blended together to create dreamy eyes. You can mix multiple shades for a painted effect. Pick different but complimentary colours for the inner corner of the eyes, centre of the lids, and your outer eye area, to end up with a playful look. Add white or black to highlight colours and create another dimension.
Expertspeak
The days of Gothic lips, cat eye and heavy brows have moved to a much fun-filled makeup. Celebrities, beauty bloggers and influencers alike are already setting the trends with styles like artsy eyeliner, dramatic eye shadow, etc. Here are some tips from beauty experts:
Graphic floating liner
This style is back with a few tweaks, like using neon colours and floating styles. The runway has always been a lover of graphic art, and this season, vibrant colours have been added to this palette. Neon greens, pinks as well as whites will trend. The liner will not just be colourful but there will be a new dimension to its application like float on the crease line.
Fun with colour
Just placing electric or neon and bright colours randomly on the eyes will do the trick. A more cloud-like approach to placement of colours will be interesting. Even the eyebrows here will not be regular. These will be merged and coloured.
Thin brows
For the real look, bold brows are out, and a more natural-filled brow is taking the roost. 2019 saw the strong, bold, more structured eyebrow trending, but it’s time for a well-filled in thin brow, which makes the look more soft and natural. It gives a more feminine look.
Subtle lip stain
You don’t always have to go super bold with your lip colour. A barely there lip stain is going to be the big makeup trend for the year. It’s a softer much-easier application and requires no touch up. You can just stain your lips, and let it go for the day. Various cosmetic companies are pumping in this product in the market.
Natural glow
Dew skin and soft light face are trending. The natural glow of the skin from within will be much sort after. A healthy bright skin look will be in. Makeup artists and celebrities have already taken to this trend.
Classic red
Red is our love forever, and this season will not compromise on our love as the lip colour is back with a vengeance. The classic red lips with a soft eye or winged liner will be seen again in 2020. While the right shade of red will always be the topic for discussion, we will certainly see crimson, blood shot and deep burgundy.

Monochromatic makeup
Simple and sensuous, monochromatic is a makeup trend that is ruling both the runways and the red carpet. The technique involves using the same colour on the face but in different ways. Use the same colour with different shades and tones for eye, cheeks and lips. Swap the rosy tone with the mauve ones, which is perfect for the fall. It looks pretty on Indian skin tone.
Glitter accents
Glitter is the gold of the makeup world. It never grows old or outdated. Add some sparkle to your look with some glitter. Dab a bit at the centre of your eyelids or try some glittery cat eye, which is in vogue this season.
Power brows
Well-defined, strong and structured brows are always in style. Give little attention to your brows, and these will bring a big difference to your whole look. From runways and red carpets, statement brows with a strong and perfected shape, arch and length.
