WHEN teenage chess sensation Divya Deshmukh bagged the women’s World Cup in Georgia recently, she underlined the upward trajectory of women chess players in India. Moments after winning the title, the prodigious talent from Nagpur hugged her mother and broke down. The tears that flowed seemed to wash away the years of toil the two had endured, dreaming of this day. If 19-year-old Divya spent hours training, her parents worked just as hard to arrange her travel across the globe, specialised coaching, and countless other expenses.
