Resident doctors at Srinagar’s Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital staged a protest on Wednesday night following the alleged assault of a colleague by a patient’s attendant in the emergency ward.

The incident occurred after a patient passed away, prompting the attendant to physically attack Dr Shahnawaz, who was on duty at the time. The assault triggered a strong reaction from the hospital’s medical staff, who launched a protest demanding immediate action against the accused.

The protesting doctors also refrained from work, which caused inconvenience to patients and disrupted routine services at the hospital.

Authorities at the Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar, under which SMHS Hospital operates, condemned the incident and said they had taken serious note of the matter.

“FIR number 11/2025 dated 23.07.2025 has been registered, and police are handling the case. Further action will follow,” the hospital administration stated in a post on X.

The administration emphasised that GMC and its affiliated hospitals are public healthcare institutions dedicated to patient care. “Our medical staff work tirelessly under challenging conditions. We urge patients and their attendants to cooperate and treat healthcare workers with respect,” the statement added.
