Thirteen youth from Karnal and Kaithal districts were among the 44 persons deported from the US in the third batch that arrived in Amritsar on Sunday night.
The deportation has triggered a wave of grief and silence in their villages, where families are struggling to come to terms with the sudden return of their youth, who had left home with hopes for a better future.
In many of these villages, neighbours, relatives, and community members have been visiting the affected families to offer moral support as the families had sent their wards after spending lakhs by selling their land or borrowing money. However, many families have chosen to remain tight-lipped, fearing social stigma.
The deported persons from Karnal and Kaithal include Rubby and Balwan Singh from Panghala, Manpreet and Gurvinder Kaur from Sambhi, Sahil Rana from Mohdinpur, Ravi and Tarsem from Rahra (Assandh), Mehak from Garhibirbal, Vijay Partap from Brass (Nissing), Meenakshi from Ghogripur, Sushil Kumar from Pabnawa, Rakesh Kumar from Kurar (Kalayat), and Jaspreet Singh from Cheeka.
Following the surge in deportations, DGP Shatrujeet Kapur has directed all SPs to provide assistance and comfort to the affected families. He has also instructed them to register cases against fraudulent immigration agents, ensure their arrests, and work toward recovering the money lost by the victims.
“The police are serious about immigration issues. SPs have been directed to register cases against agents for deceiving youth with false promises. People must follow legal immigration procedures,” said Sibash Kabiraj, IGP, Ambala Range, who is heading the SIT constituted by the then Home Minister, Anil Vij, on April 17, 2023, to tackle the rising immigration cases.
He said only 36 immigration agents in Haryana were currently registered with the Ministry of External Affairs for work visa-related services. Many others operated illegally, charging huge sums of money while making false claims about job opportunities and green card eligibility.
