Kurukshetra, February 14
With a contingent of 135 players, the Kurukshetra University (KU) is gearing up to participate in the upcoming prestigious Khelo India University Games (KIUG), slated to be held in Assam and other northeastern states of India from February 18 to 29.
Along with the players and 26 supporting staff members, including coaches and managers, the university is ready to make its mark in various disciplines.
KU Sports Director Dr Rajesh Sobti said the participants, who had qualified for the rigorous All-India Inter-University Championships 2023-24, represented a diverse range of sports.
A total of 19 teams have qualified to participate in the event, with shooting teams of men and women leading the pack with 29 players, followed by fencing teams of men and women (18), basketball men (12), volleyball men (12), kabaddi women (12), wrestling teams of men and women (10), weightlifting teams of men and women (10), boxing teams of men and women (9), judo teams of men and women (5), athletics (10) and archery (8).
Sobti said the KIUG would witness competitions across different venues in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. Each venue promises a unique backdrop for showcasing the athletic prowess of the participants. The university has a strong legacy in KIUG, consistently delivering commendable performances in the past editions.
Notably, in the previous three KIUGs held in Bhubaneswar, Bengaluru and Uttar Pradesh, the university secured the 14th, 7th, and 6th ranks, respectively.
