The Gurugram police have arrested two men posing as vigilance officers who extorted money from a traffic police officer by threatening him with false complaints. The accused, Deepak (45) from Haryana and Nitin Kumar (50) from Delhi, confessed to seven similar crimes in the Delhi-NCR region.

The incident occurred on October 15, when a traffic police zonal officer (ZO) posted at the Mayfield Garden traffic signal was approached by two men in a car. They identified themselves as vigilance officers and asked the ZO to accompany them to a police booth. Once there, they claimed to have complaints against him. When the ZO asked for details, they demanded Rs 50,000 via a WhatsApp call and later asked for Rs 5,000 for a “party”. When the ZO refused, they sent a threatening video, prompting him to file a complaint with the Sector 50 police station.

Following the complaint, police launched an investigation and arrested the accused from HUDA Market, Sector 40, on Tuesday. Deepak, a property dealer and Nitin, who frequently visits India from Nepal, admitted to using this scam to extort money. Nitin had recently arrived in India in October and the two conspired to target police officers.
