The trial run of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Phoosgarh Colony has been completed, and the plant has started functioning this week. Meanwhile, the trial of an STP at Shiv Colony is currently underway and is expected to be completed soon. Both STPs have been constructed under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
“Work on both STPs has been completed. The trial run of the 20 MLD STP at Phoosgarh has been successfully concluded. The trial run of the 8 MLD STP in Shiv Colony is ongoing, and once completed, it will also operate at full capacity,” said Niraj Kadiyan, Karnal MC Commissioner.
Under the AMRUT scheme, one of the flagship programmes of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, around 150 km of sewerage pipelines were to be laid in various colonies, along with the construction of a 20 MLD STP at Phoosgarh, an 8 MLD STP in Shiv Colony and Intermediate Pumping Stations (IPS) at the Sugar Mill and Saidpura.
The project has faced several challenges and missed multiple deadlines. Started in November 2017, with a deadline set for October 2019, the project’s completion date was first extended to March 31, 2020, then to December 31, 2020, further to June 30, 2021, and again to February 28, 2022. Despite the extensions, the agencies responsible for the work failed to meet the deadlines. Consequently, the MC imposed penalties on both agencies and reassigned the work to a new contractor. Work restarted in March 2023, with a deadline set for June. While the work on the STPs and IPSs has been completed, approximately 1.5 km of pipeline installation is still underway. The deadline has now been extended to August 31.
The Phoosgarh STP would cater to Phoosgarh, Budhakhera, DC Colony, SP Colony, Rajiv Puram, Bank Colony, Vikas Colony, Durga Colony and Uttam Nagar, while the Shiv Colony STP would provide services to Shiv Colony, Prem Nagar, Ram Nagar, Prem Colony, Mann Colony, Jyoti Nagar and surrounding areas, Kadiyan said.
