Sahil, a 20-year-old from Nandgaon village in Bhiwani district, died in Canada just a month after arriving for higher studies. His family stated that they had sold their land and invested all their savings to send him abroad, hoping he would build a life there.

Sahil’s father, retired army man Harish Kumar, had sold a 160-sq-yard plot for Rs 17 lakh and used his retirement funds to raise a total of Rs 40 lakh to send Sahil to Canada for a web design course. Sahil had left for Canada from the Delhi airport on the night of April 23 and arrived there on April 24. He was in regular touch with his family and seemed happy.

However, a few days later, his roommates noticed that he hadn’t returned to his place and began searching for him. When they couldn’t find him, they informed the local police. The police recovered a body from a lake in Hamilton on the night of May 26-27, which was later identified as Sahil’s.

The Canadian police reportedly said that Sahil drowned, but his family suspects foul play. Sahil’s uncle, Mukesh, said that Sahil was a good swimmer, making it unlikely that he drowned accidentally. They suspect he was murdered, and his body was dumped in the water.

The family is demanding a fair investigation into the incident.
