20K challans issued for wrong-side driving in Gurugram in January
The traffic police issued more than 20,000 challans amounting to Rs 1.2 crore to offenders for driving on the wrong side in January in Gurugram. On an average, more than 650 drivers were caught while driving on the wrong side daily.
A senior traffic police official said the Gurugram traffic police issued challans under the Motor Vehicle Act to 20,415 drivers, who were found driving on the wrong side from January 1 to January 31.
Wrong-side driving is one of the most common traffic violations in Gurugram, with two-wheeler riders, car drivers and even school bus drivers commuting on the wrong side of the road to save time. It is one of the key reasons behind accidents in the district.
The police have identified 80 spots in the district where wrong-side driving is prevalent.
“The major aim of the traffic police is not only to issue challans but also make traffic movement smooth and safe. Driving in the wrong direction is a major violation of traffic rules and strict action will be taken against those flouting norms. More than 20,000 challans have been issued for wrong-side driving in the month of January,” said Virender Vij, DCP (Traffic).
