21 held in 9 cybercrime cases in one week

Cyber cells of the district police have arrested 21 accused in connection with nine cases in the past week. An amount of Rs 16.55 lakh wasrecovered from them.

According to a spokesperson of the department, the cyber cell units of the three zones of the Central, NIT and Ballabgarh redressed a total of 190 complaints and managed to get a refund of the 2.36 lakh into the accounts of the complainants between February 23 and 29 in the district. He said Rs 1,29,448 that was transferred fraudulently was frozen in the bank accounts of the accused.

The arrested persons have been identified as Ghalib, a resident Badayun district of UP, Nawab Khan, Sarfraz Khan, both residing in Palla here, Anamika Roy of Uttam Nagar, Delhi, Rahis Ahmed of Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir), Nihal of Nagpur, Manjeet Kumar of Khagaria Bihar, Ronak Bairwa of Jaipur Rajasthan, Arun Singh of Gangapur Rajasthan, Praveen Kumar of Samastipur, Bihar, Karmaveer Singh of Agra, Prabhjot Singh from Bharatpur, Sahajade Khan and Danish from Bareilly, Nurul Islam Sheikh from Deoghar, Jharkhand, Abbas from Nuh, Dharmendra Kumar, a resident of Preet Vihar, Delhi, Atresh Sharma of Etah, Vishal Kumar of Indrapuri JJ Colony, Delhi, Daksh Bhushan Railway Gate, Savori, Delhi and Manthan from Shahdara Delhi.

Claiming that the modus operandi of the crime could be on the pretext of completing an online task, games, lottery, refund of lapsed insurance policies, loans within minutes, increasing credit card limits, updating KYC, sending money abroad, blackmailing on basis of obscene video calls and in the name of getting a job. He said the police had been carrying out an awareness drive in which they were asked not to pick up WhatsApp or video calls from unknown numbers and not to share any OTP or bank account details with anyone on the phone. He said calls from numbers appearing suspicious or spam callers should not to be attended or should be blocked. He said all cybercrimes needed to be reported immediately to 1930 or https://cybercrime.gov.in. This would help in freezing the bank accounts of cyber criminals and in getting the money back into the account of the victim.
