As many as 23 patients of the total 74 suffering from black fungus in the district have already been cured, while the remaining 51 are under treatment at various private hospitals.

Revealing this, a senior official of the Health Department said while 18 patients were under treatment at the government-owned ESIC Medical College and Hospital here, the rest (33) were admitted to other six leading private hospitals in the city.

“Meanwhile, nine more cases are in the suspected category as the tests to detect the disease are under way,” says Dr Ram Bhagat, district nodal officer for Covid.

Of the cured patients, 15 recovered at the local Asian Hospital, four at the SSB Hospital, two at the Metro Hospital and one each at Sarvodya hospital and the ESIC Hospital. The cases of black fungus, medically known as mucormycosis, have rapidly increased across the state, especially among patients who have been infected with Covid.

According to sources, the severity of the situation can be understood from the fact that amphotericin B, the drug used to treat this infection, is in short supply and hardly 30 to 40 per cent of the medicine required had been made available.

“We are awaiting ample stock of the drug from the department,” said an official on the condition of anonymity.
