2nd phase of Western Bypass in Karnal nears completion
The long-awaited second phase of the Western Bypass project, aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the city, is in its final stages and is expected to be opened for vehicular movement by the end of March.
The ongoing work primarily involves the laying of bitumen on a 300m stretch, with the agency currently applying the final touches to the project.
Spanning approximately 4.9 km, the second phase extends from Kaithal Road Western Yamuna Canal flyover to Ghoghripur village via Hansi Road. However, the project has faced multiple challenges and missed three deadlines due to various obstacles.
The first phase, which connects NH-44 near Uchana to Kaithal Road along the Western Yamuna Canal, is already operational, contributing to reduction in traffic congestion.
“After completing the construction of the bridge over the Bazida distributary, we are now giving final touches to the project. A layer of bitumen is being laid, following which we will open the second phase of the Western Bypass for traffic by the end of March,” said Sandeep Singh, XEN, PWD (B&R).
He maintained that the total cost of the project was around Rs 27 crore as part of the city’s outer ring road project. The final and third phase of the project is set to extend from Ghoghripur to the Bastara toll plaza where it will connect with the under-construction Eastern Bypass.
The delay in completion has been attributed to multiple factors, including the shifting of power lines and poles, obtaining a no-objection certificate (NOC) for the bridge over the Bazida distributary and issues related to sewerage line installation. Work on the second phase commenced on March 1, 2022, with an initial deadline set for February 28, 2023. The deadline was subsequently extended to July 2023, followed by another extension to March 31, 2024, and further to March 31, 2025.
