A pall of gloom descended on Saran village in Kaithal district on Wednesday evening after a tragic incident claimed the lives of three young cousins, who drowned in a deep pit filled with rainwater in a village pond. The pit had been dug days earlier for desilting, but heavy rain turned it into a death trap.

As per villagers, the three children — Akash (12), Naman (10) and Vash (11) — had stepped out of their homes to bathe in the rain. Unaware of the pit beneath the surface, they slipped and fell into it.

When they did not return home, their family members got anxious. Soon, they came to know about the drowning and ran to the pond. The children were pulled out of the pit and rushed to hospital, but were declared brought dead.

Titaram Police Station SHO Krishna Kumar confirmed the incident and said the family chose not to go for a postmortem examination, and the last rites had been performed.
