In a crackdown on encroachments, the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) on Wednesday launched a demolition drive along Meerut Road from Tau Devi Lal Chowk to the divider between Sectors 4 and 5. Encroachments on the green belts in Sectors 4, 5 and 6 were also cleared.

During the operation, around 30 unauthorised roadside dhabas and iron-shed shops were demolished and several vendors were evicted.

Officials stated that many of the removed structures were part of a larg number of makeshift eateries and shops that had mushroomed in the area, causing traffic congestion and posing risks to commuters and pedestrians.

The anti-encroachment drive was led by SDO Amit Vashisht and JE Vikram Kumar, supported by other HSVP officials. Two JCB machines and tractor-trailers were deployed to clear the site. XEN Irrigation Paramjeet Sihag served as the Duty Magistrate, while a substantial police presence ensured the operation remained peaceful.

Despite prior notices being issued, many encroachers failed to vacate the area. Some attempted resistance, but the police prevented any disruption.

“These illegal structures were constructed on HSVP land, causing significant obstruction to traffic and inconvenience to the public. We had been receiving complaints for a long time and this action was necessary,” said SDO Amit Vashisht.

He added that HSVP Estate Officer Devender Sharma had directed all teams to act firmly. “The Estate Officer has made it clear that no encroachment on HSVP-acquired land will be tolerated,” he said.

Officials emphasised that this was part of a wider campaign to make Karnal encroachment-free. “No one will be allowed to occupy roads, footpaths, or government land. Whether it is a small street vendor or permanent structure, everyone is under strict watch. Repeat violations will attract immediate action,” the SDO added.
