The cyber cell of the district police has arrested as many as 32 persons in eight cybercrime cases solved in the past one week. The police have also recovered Rs 21.55 lakh.
ACP (cybercrime) Abhimanyu Goyat said the cyber cell of the NIT police station solved four cases, the Ballabhgarh cell solved three cases and the Central police station solved one case between June 28 and July 4.
The arrested accused were identified as Ashish, Himanshu, Shahrukh Alam, Shekhar Anand, Chandni Kumari, Anjali, Kajal, Kranti, Sapna, Archana, Anjali, Sneha, Vaishali Kumari, Komal, Manisha Kumari, Neha, Singh, Salma, Ankita, Ashish, Pawan alias Pappu, Goldie alias Prince, Sagir Ali, Salman Ali, Sandeep, Santosh Singh, Ranjit Kumar, Vandana, Mandeep, Mukesh Kumar, Pritesh Kumar, Shashank Mohan and Sanjeev Kumar.
These accused have been nabbed from various places in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and parts of the NCR in cases registered in the district in the past few months.
Revealing their modus operandi, the ACP (cybercrime) said some of the accused lured victims with handsome jobs online, while some asked victims to invest in share market and diverted money into their own accounts using fake apps and platforms.
The accused also cheated people on the pretext of completing tasks on Telegram and easy bank loans. Besides, some of the accused blackmailed people by posting obscene videos or luring people to deposit money through QR codes, UPI or asked for OTP after posing as bank officials. These cybercriminals had also been sending fake messages for the submission or clearance of power, water and property tax bills.
The ACP said while Rs 1,90,800 had been refunded, Rs 7.36 lakh was freezed in the accused’s bank accounts. He also urged the public to immediately report cybercrimes on 1930 or https://cybercrime.gov.in as it could help the police in freezing the bank accounts of cybercriminals.
The police have also released a helpline number: 9991252353 for conducting awareness programmes at any public place, educational or social institution.
