The accident occurred around 9 a.m. when a truck travelling towards Gharaunda lost control, crossed the divider, and entered the opposite lane. It first rammed into a Punjab Roadways bus and then crushed a bike and a car, resulting in the death of four people and injuries to passengers of the bus. Among the victims, two were travelling in the car while the other two were riding the motorcycle.

“In minutes, four people lost their lives,” said an eyewitness.

Jagdish, another eyewitness who was travelling from Panipat to Karnal, said the truck suddenly crossed the divider. After entering the Panipat-Karnal carriageway, it first hit a Punjab Roadways bus heading from Delhi to Amritsar, triggering panic among passengers and injuring them. The speeding truck then struck a motorcycle before dragging a car under its wheels. The car was completely crushed, and the truck overturned near the service lane railing, leaving behind a trail of twisted metal and devastation. Witnesses described the scene as terrifying, with people screaming for help as the wreckage settled.

Gharaunda SHO Inspector Deepak, along with police personnel, reached the spot and sent the injured to the hospital. The truck driver was pulled out by breaking the windshield, while two passengers remained trapped inside the mangled car as rescue teams cut through the vehicle to reach them.

Police have begun an investigation, and the bodies have been sent to Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (KCGMC). Police believe the extent of the damage clearly indicates that overspeeding was a major factor.

“We are investigating the reasons behind the accident,” said the SHO.
