To ease traffic congestion on the NH-44 and on three flyovers in the city and provide better road connectivity, the work to construct five main railway underpasses are going on at a rapid pace. It is expected that the two railway underpasses will be opened to traffic by March-end.

The ‘Textile City’ was divided into two parts after the construction of an elevated flyover on the NH-44 and the main markets or industrial areas are situated on the eastern side of the flyover, while the maximum residential areas and old industrial areas are on the western side of the flyover.

The Assandh road flyover, Jatal road flyover and Gohana road flyover are main connectors that connect the city. Due to heavy movement of vehicles, the flyovers and the NH-44 witness traffic snarls, especially in the day, causing inconvenience to commuters.

To ease traffic congestion on the NH-44 and three flyovers, MLA Urban Pramod Vij brought a special project for the construction of railway underpasses.

After his efforts, the detailed project report of the underpasses were prepared and after getting the approval, the work for the projects has been handed over to the Northern Railways. Now, the work to construct these underpasses is going on.

Under the project, five underpasses, including three underpasses near the Assandh road flyover, in Bishan Saroop Colony near Sector 6, and near the Gohana road, are being developed under the Delhi-Panipat-Ambala railway line, while one is being constructed at the Azaad Nagar railway crossing on the Panipat-Gohana railway line.

Residents of Model Town, Kachha Camp, Weavers Colony, Old Industrial area, Batra Colony, Virat Nagar, Friends Colony and Raj Nagar will get relief from traffic congestion after the construction of these underpasses.

Gaurav Leekha, president, Sahyog Charitable Trust, said after constriction of these underpasses, the volume of traffic in certain parts of the city would be reduced up to 30 to 40 per cent.

Mohit Bajaj, president, Ring Road Welfare Association, said after the construction of these underpasses, the pollution level, along with traffic congestion, would be eased.

MLA Pramod Vij said all these five underpasses were being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 30 crore. All these underpasses would be commissioned by May.

“I have also asked MC officials to prepare a detailed project report for the construction of roads connecting these underpasses to provide better facilities to the residents,” he said.

Sandeep Kalyan, senior section engineer, Railways, said, “Two underpasses near the Assandh road flyover and near Bishan Saroop Colony would be commissioned by March-end. Blocks for the underpasses near Azad Nagar will be pushed on February 14. Blocks for the Sector 6 underpasses will be pushed under the track soon.”
