Representative of the panchayats, along with the police, launched a comprehensive campaign in five villages — comprising Sheikhpura, Dhani Shobha, Singhwa Ragho, Dhani Kendu and Richpura — which resulted in these being declared drug-free. Besides, these villages wards 9, 10, 16, 17 and 23 of Hansi town and Ward 2 and 13 of Narnaund town were declared drug-free.

Additional Director General (ADGP) M Ravi Kiran, who was the chief guest at the event organised at Government Senior School in Hansi, appreciated the efforts of locals and the police for achieving the feat. Panchayat and Education Department officials, along with other administrative officials, also attended the event.

The ADGP said the increasing abuse of drugs was a huge problem. “It is necessary to curb this evil in time. Various departments and local representatives will have to work in tandem to eradicate the menace completely from society,” he said.

The ADGP said the Hisar Range police were working on three levels to achieve the aim. He said they were keeping tabs on drug mafia and controlling their movements, identifying the youth addicted to drugs and getting them treated, besides making society and the young generation aware of the evil of substance abuse.

Kiran said these efforts had yielded fruitful results so far. “About 700 people in the areas under the jurisdiction of Hisar Range police have gotten rid of drug abuse. Besides, a number of people are undergoing treatment to quit addiction. It is a matter of satisfaction that in the latest survey, no case of any youth addicted to drugs was detected here,” he said.

A five-time panchayat member Suresh Kumar said there was a need to form a committee at the village level to keep an eye on elements who indulged in drug trade.

Cops hold camp at village

A team of the Hisar Range police organised a camp at Shahpur village in the district. Six youths approached officials at the camp, seeking help for de-addiction. The police said they had begun administering treatment to the youths with the help of medical staff.
