The Sunder branch canal developed a 50ft-wide breach near Bhawar village of the district on Sunday due to which crops spread over 500 acres got submerged.
Not only this, the canal water flowed over the road and reached up to the village. Deputy Commissioner Manoj Kumar also visited the breach site and ordered an inquiry into the matter.
DC Manoj Kumar said that a joint team of the Irrigation Department and Revenue Department had been constituted to inquire into the breach. The loss to farmers due to the breach would also be ascertained.
On receiving the information, a team of officials of the Irrigation Department reached the spot and stopped the canal water from Anta head in Jind district.
The breach was witnessed by villagers at around 11.30 am on Sunday. They informed the Irrigation Department officials immediately about it.
Irrigation officials led by XEN Punit from Jind reached the spot and stopped the water in the canal from the Anta head but the water was flowing till the evening. After getting information about the canal breach near Bhawar village, Congress MLA Induraj Narwal reached the spot and reviewed the farmers’ loss. He demanded Rs 80,000 per acre compensation to the farmers.
AAP leader Sandeep Malik also reached the spot and met the farmers there.
The farmers said that the bank of the canal was very weak and that was the main reason behind the breach.
