Besides, a number of posts of faculty members are also lying vacant at the institute.

Sources said that more than 50 per cent posts of senior resident doctors, demonstrators and tutors at different clinical departments at the PGIMS were lying vacant, which put a huge pressure on the postgraduate (PG) students.
As per official data, only 153 posts of senior resident doctors are filled as against the 364 sanctioned posts.
When contacted, Prof Anita Saxena, Vice-Chancellor of Pt Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences (UHS), Rohtak, said there was a shortage of senior resident doctors at the PGIMS as a majority of the doctors preferred to join super-specialisation courses after completing their post-graduation. “There is generally a shortage of senior residents in the Departments of General Surgery and Medicine,” she said.
The Vice-Chancellor said that walk-in interviews were being conducted on a regular basis to recruit senior resident doctors in different departments.
“The process to appoint faculty members is also underway as the state government has authorised the university to recruit faculty members on a contractual basis,” she said.
Nonetheless, several senior consultants-cum-faculty members have also left the institute and joined private hospitals recently.
Sources said that besides doctors, there was an acute shortage of paramedical staff and other non-teaching employees at the PGIMS, which added to the woes of patients and their attendants.
“Nearly half of the sanctioned posts of paramedics are lying vacant, due to which the patients have to suffer a lot,” said Ravi Sangwan, the president of the Non-Teaching Employees Association at the institute.
Sangwan stated that they had recently submitted a representation to the Chief Minister and sought time to meet him.
“We will convey our concerns to the Chief Minister and request him to recruit adequate employees to ensure the smooth functioning of the institute when we meet him,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Jan Swasthay Abhiyan (JSA), Haryana, has urged state Health Minister Dr Kamal Gupta to appoint adequate number of doctors, nurses and paramedical staffers at the PGIMS for the benefit of the poor patients visiting the institute. In a representation submitted to the Health Minister, the JSA has also requested him to ensure the provision of the requisite infrastructure and equipment at the institute.
